Take a Walk
15,000 steps,10,000 steps, 7,000 steps. does it matter how many? Probably not. More on this later…The point is to move. And the easiest, most available form of movement for most, is walking.
It has become clear, through much research, that the folks who live the longest, highest quality lives, are those who move more. It is said that sitting has become the new smoking in terms of negative health effects.
And one does not need to join a fancy gym or purchase expensive exercise equipment to lead a healthier life. All you need is reaonably comfortable footwear and a safe location.
Recently, researchers have found that 7,000 steps each day is probably as beneficial in preventing premature death as 10,000 steps each day, which has been the gold standard for many years. Fit bits, apps on our phone and other modalities help us keep track of our steps every day.
As long as our legs ae functioning properly, walking is nearly perfect exercise. With good posture, walking promotes core strength and even improved function of our internal organs.
The other advantage to walking as an important source of movement is the opportunity for what I call “mobile meditation”. The rhythmic nature of your steps fosters focus on your breathing and the opportunity for mindfulness as you pay attention to the experience of all your senses. Try leaving your phone and your ear pods at home when you go out for your walk. Enjoy the sounds of nature and civilization around you. Enjoy the smells, revel in the view - the people, the pets, the architecture, the wild and planned vegetative beauty of where we live. This can foster a gratefulness which propels you through the remainder of your day.
Start slow. Even twenty minutes of walking will require 4,000 steps and cover about a mile at a standard pace. Try to do this every day, increase your steps as tolerated, and you will soon see the benefits on your health, your well being, your digestion, your waist line and your outlook on life!
