Improving Self-Esteem
In my Wellness work I come across many patients who struggle with maintaining healthy self esteem. They feel disconnected often because they feel unloveable. This is particularly true amongst young people who spend far too much screen time viewing images of perfection that are humanly unattainable, yet viewer’s algorithms repeatedly convince these individuals that they don’t measure up, that they are not enough.
The key to helping these patients recover their self esteem is to help them understand that they are, in fact, enough, and in most cases exceptional in some way. One author suggests a tool that I find particularly helpful. It is known as the “three C’s”. They are Competence, Confidence and Connection. Let’s explore this.
Everyone is good at something, the trick is to find where the person with low self esteem possesses competence, and help them appreciate this. Competence, whether is it in your work, in your relationships, your family life, or even a hobby, helps one realize their specialness and their value to humanity.
Once a person’s area of competence is discovered, confidence will grow as the person becomes more aware of their expertise. This kind of confidence allows one to take risks, meet new people and they new things. Self esteem will naturally improve and flourish once confidence improves.
Connection is key for positive self esteem, as relationships are the primary source of love, compassion, understanding and empathy. It is often said that one cannot effectively love until o ne loves him or herself.
Health/Life Coaching simply turns the mirror on folks, allowing them to see what is already there: their talents, their uniqueness and the valuable connections that they already have. With improved self esteem, people then have the ability to go out and seek what they know will improve their lives.
Call me if you think I might be able to help you with these issues.
