Vote for Wellness
WHY WE MUST VOTE: IT’S ABOUT WELLNESS:
Since this is technically a wellness column, let’s examine the risks to our health and well being that we have experienced since the start of this present administration, in January 2025:
Innocent people have been jailed, deported and shot in the street, all in the course of immigration policy.
People are dying from measles as an epidemic sweeps the country - all of which could have been prevented - we have the science, technology and know-how to do so.
Thousands of Iranian civilians - men, women and children - have died at the hands of the American military, in an undeclared, unjustified war, with no press coverage, therefore no accountability. American causalities and military property destruction is much worse than initially reported (with no press at the Pentagon, NOTHING is being accurately reported).
Food Bourne illnesses are more frequent as the FDA and other organizations endure budget and personnel disruptions
Diminishing Medicaid funding has led to rural hospital closings and personal benefit slashing.
On October 19, Ukrainian refugees stand to lose TPS (temporary protective status), and face deportation back to an active shooting war
Maternal mortality has dramatically increased
The United States ranks 59th amongst the world’s wealthiest nations in Infant Mortality.
The administration continues to promote voter restrictions and attempts to limit minority and immigrant groups’ election eligibility. This limits much of the population from voting on issues directly affecting their families’ wellness.
Persistent inflation, fueled by Iran War associated energy disruptions, is leading families to place economic survival over healthy practices.
A member of our Ukrainian family stopped by our house the other evening to pick up mail that is still delivered to our home. When asked how they were doing, I detected a tear, and sad expression. The US State Dept. will not give them a clear answer on whether their TPS (Temporary Protective Status) will be continued or not. That, along with the possible revocation of their driver’s licenses, will make it impossible for them to live and work in the US. They do not understand why this country seems so mad at them when they have contributed, paid taxes and followed ALL the rules.
Yesterday’s news featured a man, shot in the back on an American street by ICE was then handcuffed, thrown in the ICE vehicle and taken to detention facility BEFORE being seen at the hospital. In the detention center, he was forced to lay on the floor and was given nothing for pain. Eventually, when he developed weakness on one side - possibly because the bullet was so close to his spine, he was sent to the hospital. His condition is uncertain. Outrageous!
We used to be a country the world looked up to as the moral standard. Now we are country the rest of the world thinks has lost its way, and the world tries to encourage us back to “normal”.
Remember, the voice of the voter counts. Vote, let your voice be heard, and maybe, just maybe, we will have the chance to restore our basic compassionate values to ensure our ongoing wellness.
