Renewal

Renewal

Everyday we have the opportunity to renew and reinvent ourselves. Especially this time of year, spring time with Easter, Passover and Ramadan, we all have the opportunity to look at our lives, reassess and re-evaluate. And once we make the small changes we may need to make to live more productive, joyful lives, we can begin anew.

Of course we have regrets. We should approach regret as an opportunity to learn from our missteps and unhelpful decisions. Sometimes to realign our approach to our lives, all it takes is for us to “change our minds” a bit. And no better time to do this than Spring.

This is also when journaling can be very helpful. If you are having trouble centering to see yourself objectively, take a few minutes each morning and just write a few paragraphs, sentences or even pages. And do it long hand. There is something about the connection of your brain to your hand and through to the pen which helps you access your deepest, most authentic thoughts. Just write freely. don’t think about it. Let the thoughts flow, and after a few minutes, stop and then read what you wrote. It will astound you. It’s like having a deep, honest conversation with yourself.

The most important first step in reinventing yourself is to KNOW who you are, which can be easily done with these morning writings. Then consider those thoughts, activities, habits which take you away from your essential self. Try not to focus on black/white, right/wrong or good/bad. Instead, consider those aspects of your life which are most helpful at keeping you on track with your goals and preserve those. Factors which detract from your essential self, or do not contribute to your goals  should be eliminated or changed.

This spring season of renewal, take the opportunity to be your best self, do your best work, be the most loving spouse, friend, relative, employee, boss, colleague or creative artist you can. It is within your reach, and being more aligned with your essential self will bring you joy.
