Finding Purpose

HEALING THROUGH PURPOSE

Folks in the Wellness culture often emphasize the difference between healing and curing. While we can “cure” specific diseases with medicines, surgery or other therapies, we can only “heal” by restoring wholeness. In other words, a specific health issue can be cured without being healed, while healing is required in order for the illness or disorder to be definitely resolved.

One of the most profound ways one can heal is to find one’s essential purpose and then live consistently within it. Illness can result from the stress on the immune system that results when one is living inauthentically, separated from the essential self. These types of illnesses (cancer, autoimmune disorders, heart disease, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, addictions of all kinds) cannot be definitively cured unless one’s body and soul are healed back to wholeness.

A couple examples of true healing:

I saw on the local news that a Tampa family, outraged by the Ukrainian war and resulting refugee crisis, sponsored a Ukrainian family to stay with them, until a safe home can be found for them. The actions of this amazing host family will not change the entire world, but by bringing this Ukrainian family to safety, their world will be forever touched. And consequently, the host family achieves healing and wellness, by living their true selves, with the courage to connect compassionately with those in desperate need.

One of the challenges of my own life is caring for my almost 92 year old mother, now in assisted living near our home. As her memory and cognition inexorably declines, my daily visits are her one connection to anything she can reliably recognize. It is not easy, often challenging, frustrating and even aggravating. But giving her final months meaning, love and connection has, I often have to remind myself, healed my soul by giving me compassionate purpose.

Truly living one’s essential self and purpose will not be easy, may require sacrifice, yet sometimes truly helps the world. If you might heal yourself by also caring for others, why not give it a shot?
