Being Mindful

MINDFULNESS

I have spoken often about the health of living in the present. That is not always as easy as it sounds. Here’s a tool you can use to become mindful of your present, moving from dwelling on the past or worrying about the future.

This practice involves utilizing and becoming cognizant of your five senses. When you find your mind wandering to the stressful state of living in the past or the future, take stock of your senses and become mindful of your sensory experience. In other words:

  1. Bring to consciousness things you are SEEING before you

  2. Become aware of sounds you are HEARING, scents you are SMELLING, textures your FEELING and flavors you may be TASTING.

  3. Concentrate on these sensory experiences, mindfully excluding thoughts of the future or past.

This will zap your consciousness into the present. There will simply not be mental space to obsess about anything else. Once you have fixed your mind on the experiences in the present, then ask yourself what emotions you are feeling and why. This may require some meditation and introspection. But it will bring you peace and clarity of thought, allowing you to heal.

So often we find out minds racing to a place of worry and regret which doses no good and only creates stress which robs us of our health. This mindfulness exercise will hopefully help bring you to a place of  restored health and wellness, in your mindful state.
